Skagway, Alaska: Gold Rush History, White Pass Railway & Mountain Adventure
Skagway is one of those Alaska ports where the story is still visible in the streets beneath your feet.
Walk Broadway past restored Gold Rush buildings or board the historic White Pass & Yukon Route and climb into the mountains along a railroad built because thousands of stampeders were chasing a dream. History and scenery do not compete here — they explain each other.
- Ride the historic White Pass & Yukon Route
- Walk through a preserved Klondike Gold Rush town
- Choose history, rail, hiking or an easy independent day
A PORT THAT STILL LOOKS CONNECTED TO ITS PAST
Skagway Is a Gold Rush Town You Can Walk Through
In 1897 and 1898, the Klondike Gold Rush sent thousands of hopeful stampeders north through Alaska and into Canada.
Skagway became one of the great staging points for that movement. Today, the National Park Service preserves the boomtown story through restored buildings, museums, trails and interpretation throughout town.
For a cruise group, that history is unusually accessible: you can begin learning almost as soon as you reach Broadway.
ONE SMALL TOWN • SEVERAL VERY DIFFERENT DAYS

THE RAILROAD BUILT BECAUSE OF GOLD
White Pass & Yukon Route
Construction began during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898. Today, the historic narrow-gauge railway is Skagway’s signature excursion.
FROM SKAGWAY INTO THE COAST MOUNTAINS
Why Is the White Pass Railway So Famous?
The railroad was built to overcome the steep mountain route between tidewater at Skagway and the interior routes used during the Gold Rush.
Travel Alaska notes that the line climbs toward White Pass at about 2,888 feet, where the route reaches the international boundary between the United States and Canada.
Along the way, passengers see mountain valleys, waterfalls, historic engineering features and landscapes tied directly to the Gold Rush story.
DO NOT ASSUME EVERY TRAIN EXPERIENCE IS THE SAME
Compare the Actual White Pass Excursion on Your Sailing
The railway offers different excursion formats and routes, so the specific product matters.
A scenic round-trip rail excursion can focus on the climb toward White Pass and the route’s Gold Rush engineering.
Selected excursions may travel farther or connect with additional destinations and transportation.
Some itineraries cross into Canada. Verify the actual route, identification requirements and current excursion terms.
White Pass & Yukon Route schedules, routes, duration, prices and border requirements can change. Confirm the current excursion offered for your sailing rather than relying on old descriptions.
A NATIONAL PARK EXPERIENCE IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park
The National Park Service preserves more than 20 historic buildings in Skagway and interprets the stories of the stampeders, merchants, workers and communities affected by the Gold Rush.
The park visitor center and museum at 2nd Avenue and Broadway is a natural starting point for travelers who want to understand what happened here before simply walking past the buildings.
Ranger programs, building access and operating schedules can vary, so check current information for the travel date.
FALSE FRONTS • WOODEN SIDEWALKS • REAL HISTORY
Broadway Is More Than a Shopping Street
Travel Alaska describes a seven-block Broadway corridor where historic false-front buildings and wooden sidewalks preserve the visual character of the Gold Rush town.
Some buildings remain commercial while others are preserved by the National Park Service as museums and interpretive sites.
That makes downtown Skagway unusually easy for a group: people can explore at different speeds while remaining close together.
1898 WAS NOT A QUIET YEAR HERE
Skagway Became a Boomtown Almost Overnight
Gold discoveries in the Klondike brought thousands of people north, transforming Skagway into a chaotic gateway to the trails toward the Yukon.

SKAGWAY HAD A RIVAL
Dyea & the Chilkoot Trail Story
In 1898, nearby Dyea competed with Skagway as a Gold Rush gateway. Dyea stood at the foot of the Chilkoot Trail, which thousands of stampeders used on their journey toward the Klondike.
After the White Pass & Yukon Route chose Skagway as its departure point, Dyea declined rapidly and much of the former townsite was eventually reclaimed by nature.
The contrast between surviving Skagway and vanished Dyea is one of the most interesting parts of the region’s history.
The full historic trail is a demanding multi-day backcountry route. Shorter local hiking options are a different experience.
A SIMPLE WAY TO UNDERSTAND IT
Two Gateways. Two Trails. One Gold Rush.
SKAGWAY IS NOT ONLY A HISTORY LESSON
What If Your Group Wants More Outdoor Adventure?
Mountains, forests, lakes and trails surround town, creating options for travelers who want to combine Gold Rush history with more active Alaska experiences.
Trail options begin close to town and can lead toward forest, lakes and viewpoints.
Rail and road excursions can move quickly from town into dramatic alpine scenery.
Many outdoor routes make more sense when connected to the history of the stampeders.
You can still have an excellent port day without committing to a strenuous excursion.

An Easy Skagway Cruise-Day Strategy
Check Your Port Time

Choose Rail or Town First
If the White Pass Railway is a priority, build the rest of the day around it.
Use Downtown Flexibly
Broadway and historic sites can fill the remaining time without creating stress.
Protect the Return
Leave enough margin after longer excursions to return to the ship comfortably.
THE WEATHER MAY CHANGE BEFORE THE TRAIN REACHES THE PASS
Dress for Elevation as Well as Downtown
Skagway’s downtown weather and conditions higher in the mountains can feel very different during the same day.
Layers, rain protection and comfortable footwear are practical for most cruise visitors, especially when combining town walking with a mountain excursion.
